How Often Should You Review Your Estate Plan

June 7, 2016 by Jayashree Kathardekar, paralegal

Creating your estate plan is very important, but maintaining the estate plan is just as important. Often after people create their estate plan, they simply put the documents away and forget about them. Then something drastic happens in their lives and the event reminds them they need to pay attention to their estate plan. Some of these events include marriage, divorce, serious illness, having children or grandchildren, death of a beneficiary, moving to a new state or out of the local area, buying/selling of assets and changes in federal and state laws.

These are just a few examples of the many situations that can affect your estate plan so you need to review your estate plan on a regular basis to insure that it still meets your estate planning goals. Our clients receive, in our quarterly newsletter mailing, a reminder to come in and get a “check-up” of their estate plan. This is a 30 minute complimentary review of their estate plan. If there are any changes that need to be made the attorney will inform the client of the costs, but it is up to the client to decide if they wish to proceed with those changes. Typically our clients come in every 3 to 5 years for their check-up. If there are changes in your personal situation that warrant the need to revise your estate plan sooner, then we encourage you to come in and discuss those with our estate planning attorneys.

If it time for your “check-up” or you need to make changes to your estate planning documents then contact our office at (650) 463-1550 to schedule your complimentary 30 minute review of your estate planning documents with one of our highly trained estate planning attorneys.
